Topic: An insight into what is needed and practical to keep our cars on the road
As our cars age and we service and maintain the mechanical adjustments, often hidden away in the depths of the engine bay Starter Motors are neglected, as long as they work everything seems fine, the 6 cylinder Clouds and Bentleys of the 1950s have an oiling point often never checked the later v8 cars have a no maintenance factor built in. The earlier cars have crank handles and can be manually started in an emergency. As the years go on cars often do short trips and are stopped and started many times even though the distances are not great, causing wear on the Starter. A typical example is drive to Church on Sunday then to the paper shop next to pick up something for lunch, park the car out the front take in the shopping and finally start again to put the car in the garage a total of 8 times in about 5 or 6 km. A Starter does a lot of work even though the cars mileage may not be great. Some failures were evident on the trip to Hahndorf. For the six cylinder cars removal and a check of the brushes windings and engagement pinion is quite easy for the V8 cars put a new replacement one in. This in not so easy.
We will have Neil Mathews at L.G.S.I. on May 7th at our usual start time of 10.30 am. Neil has been researching available spare parts through Bespoke Spares and will give us an insight into what is needed and practical to keep our cars on the road. Join us with Steve at the BBQ for lunch and Ladies welcome.
Motoring on together.
